The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) has established the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) to promote responsible and sustainable practices in the design, construction and operation of new or renovated buildings. Those projects succeeding in this pursuit, as defined by various LEED® rating systems, receive recognition for their efforts in the form of formal building certification. Four levels of certification may be achieved: Basic, Silver, Gold and Platinum, each subsequent level requiring more of a commitment to sustainble design systems and strategies.
